Treatment and prevention of oral diseases
What is dentistry?
Dentistry is a specialty of Medicine that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases. This includes the care of teeth, from maintenance to restoration of their health to prevent and treat cavities, fractures and other dental problems.
Most common diseases treated by general dentistry
Dental Caries
Dental caries is the destruction of tooth tissues, caused by acids produced by bacteria present in dental plaque that accumulates on tooth surfaces. A detailed examination can detect signs such as white spots, which indicate areas without enamel, or brown discoloration.
The most effective treatments to combat cavities include fillings and root canals, which help restore dental health. To prevent cavities, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is a bacterial oral disease that causes inflammation and bleeding of the gums, usually due to food debris trapped between the teeth.
The most common causes of gingivitis include poor dental hygiene, hormonal changes during pregnancy that increase gum sensitivity, uncontrolled diabetes, misaligned teeth, rough edges of fillings, and the use of poorly placed or contaminated oral appliances, such as dental braces, prostheses, bridges and crowns.
