Have you been hit and lost a tooth? Stay calm, there's a solution.

Sometimes as a result of a blow or accident, you can lose one of your teeth. Although it can be alarming, don't worry, there is a solution. Knowing how to react to such a situation can return the tooth to its place as if nothing had happened.

Oops... I've lost my tooth!!! What do I do now?

  1. Try to stay calm and most importantly, locate the tooth as soon as possible. Pick it up carefully by the crown (the white part), never by the root, to avoid damaging the ligament fibers that help reattachment.
  2. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline solution for a maximum of 10 seconds. Never use soap, chemicals, or scrub it.
  3. Try to reposition the tooth in its socket immediately. Bite down gently on a gauze or cloth to keep it in place.
  4. If you can't reposition it, keep the tooth moist at all times:
    - Best option: In a container with milk
    - Alternative: In your mouth (between cheek and gums)
    - Emergency option: In saline solution
    - Never use plain water as it can damage root cells
  5. Seek emergency dental care immediately. Time is critical - the best results occur when the tooth is reimplanted within 30 minutes.

Different scenarios and solutions

Permanent tooth completely knocked out

This is a true dental emergency. Follow the steps above and get to Microdental Clinic or nearest emergency dentist immediately. Success rate is highest within the first hour.

Baby tooth knocked out

Important: Never attempt to reimplant a baby tooth. This could damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. Apply pressure to stop bleeding and contact your pediatric dentist for evaluation.

Tooth pushed into gum (intrusion)

Don't try to pull it out. This requires professional evaluation as it may affect the tooth's blood supply and surrounding bone.

Loose or displaced tooth

Gently push it back to its original position if possible. Bite on gauze to stabilize and see your dentist immediately for splinting.

Broken or chipped tooth

Save any pieces you can find. Rinse mouth with warm water, apply cold compress to reduce swelling, and see your dentist promptly.

Prevention is key

  • Wear a mouthguard during sports activities
  • Use seatbelts in vehicles
  • Child-proof your home to prevent falls
  • Don't use teeth as tools
  • Address teeth grinding (bruxism) with a night guard
