Myths and doubts about pregnancy and oral health

1. "Pregnancy left me without teeth"

It's common to hear this phrase, but what truth is there to this claim? Are your teeth really at risk if you're pregnant? As in all stages of life, during pregnancy it's important to follow a balanced diet and maintain correct oral hygiene.

A very widespread belief links calcium deficiency with tooth loss during pregnancy. This is completely false. The calcium your baby needs comes from your diet, not from your teeth. However, hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect your gums and make them more susceptible to inflammation and bleeding, which is known as pregnancy gingivitis.

2. Morning sickness and dental erosion

Morning sickness, especially during the first trimester, can expose your teeth to stomach acids. These acids can erode tooth enamel if proper precautions aren't taken. After vomiting, rinse your mouth with water mixed with a teaspoon of baking soda to neutralize the acid. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to avoid damaging softened enamel.

3. Increased risk of cavities

During pregnancy, you may experience cravings for sugary foods or eat more frequently due to nausea. This, combined with possible morning sickness and changes in oral hygiene routine, can increase cavity risk. Maintain a strict oral hygiene routine and limit sugary snacks between meals.

4. Safe dental treatments during pregnancy

The second trimester is generally the safest time for routine dental treatments. However, dental emergencies should be treated immediately regardless of pregnancy stage. Always inform your dentist that you're pregnant. X-rays should be avoided unless absolutely necessary, and certain medications may need to be postponed until after delivery.

5. Nutrition for dental health

Your diet during pregnancy affects both your dental health and your baby's developing teeth. Ensure adequate intake of:
- Calcium: dairy products, leafy greens, fortified foods
- Vitamin D: for calcium absorption
- Phosphorus: meat, fish, eggs
- Vitamin C: citrus fruits, tomatoes, broccoli
